George Erwin

1963 | Honorary MemberCompany: The Atlanta Journal

George Erwin, real estate editor for The Atlanta Journal from 1945 to 1963, was awarded honorary life membership in the Building Owners and Managers of Atlanta in 1963, according to the April 10, 1963, issue of The Atlanta Journal. George was awarded membership “for his long-time interest in and devotion to Atlanta’s real estate industry.” The membership was also awarded in conjunction with his retirement from The Atlanta Journal.

Reflecting on his career, George said, “I would estimate that I have watched more than half of the important real estate development in the Atlanta area that occurred in the last half century, My biggest regret on retirement from The Journal is that I won’t be able to cover the city’s continued expansion I’m sure is coming about between now and 1970.”

Gid McEachern, 1961-1963 BOMA Atlanta President, said, “We feel that George has been one of us all these years and it is only fitting that we pay him this tribute. He has been one of our most ardent supporters and has publicized our activities and the part we have played in bringing Atlanta to the fore as one of the leading cities in the matter of attractive and well-run office buildings. It will be our pleasure to join his host of friends in paying tribute to one who has been so closely associated with and has played an important role in the progress of our industry in metropolitan Atlanta and Georgia.”

George joined The Atlanta Journal in the Classified Ad Department in 1920 and later worked in sales for that department. He then worked in the Display Advertising Department before becoming the real estate editor in the spring of 1945.

Georgia was a member of the National Association of Real Estate Editors, where he served three terms as a director. He also served as vice president of the Dixie States Chapter of Lambda Alpha International, an honorary land economics fraternity; and as vice president of Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalistic society.

He was also an honorary member of the Georgia Association of Real Estate Boards, the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Atlanta Rela Estate Board, and the DeKalb Real Estate Board.
