1963 | Member of the Year Award (Discontinued)

Harry M. Thweatt was recognized with the 1963 BOMA Atlanta George F. Richardson Award.

He was born in 1887 in Eastaboga, Alabama. He built the Medical Arts Building, located in downtown Atlanta, and in 1927 became manager, vice president, and treasurer of the 12-story Beaux-Arts style building. The nearly 89,000 square feet building was widely considered one of the most modern buildings of its kind when it was built and was among the first to have a covered parking garage.

In 1961, Harry received the B’nai B’rith citation for “outstanding service in promoting equal opportunities for the employment of the physically handicapped” from the Metropolitan Atlanta Committee for the Employment of the Handicapped, according to the November 8, 1961 issue of The Atlanta Constitution.

According to the October 8, 1963 issue of The Atlanta Constitution, Harry was named by BOMA Atlanta as Outstanding Manger of Atlanta in May 1963 and he died five months later in October 1963.

Following Harry’s death, his wife Ruth became property manager of the Medical Arts Building, after serving the building as secretary for three decades. Ruth is considered to be BOMA Atlanta’s first female property manager member.
